The movie stars Marilyn Chambers as Gloria, a young woman who checks into a hotel in the mountains only to be kidnapped and taken to an exclusive invitation-only swingers club. Little does she know, she is the main attraction! In fact, before the evening is over, she will submit to her fate and be stripped, stroked, kissed, licked, sucked & fucked by about fourteen men and women. Although a little slow at first, the film ramps up to the 40 minute orgy scene and doesn't let up from there. With very little dialog and a jazzy, sometimes eerie score, it's easy to tell this won't be anything like a modern-day group sex scene. When Gloria comes out on stage for the costumed guests, she looks fantastic; when she's disrobed a minute later, she looks even better. Her smooth, young skin gleams in the spotlight as she grapples with three men at once, sucking and tugging at their engorged cocks while they dangle from a trapeze. When the green door at the back of the stage opens, everyone turns in anticipation. I won't tell you who or what emerges from that door, but I will say that the resulting scenes are like being on a disturbing, but mesmerizing acid trip. By all means, find out what's Behind the Green Door; you won't regret it! - Cherry Honeywell REVIEW- I already reviewed this movie on VHS a few years ago and had mixed feelings about it. It stands out as a classic to be sure, but there are some shortcomings that can not be overlooked. I recently had a chance to re-watch this all-time classic on DVD and it was really impressed. Some of what I disliked about my VHS copy are fixed in this DVD release. The picture quality has been cleaned up and the horrible audio problems are mostly gone. Marilyn Chambers is still one of the most stunning women to grace the screen and I can appreciate that this movie was revolutionary forty years ago. Things have changed and porn has evolved and today’s director’s are free to shoot sex in a way that makes this look very soft and a little flat some times. The story is probably too edgy for today and hopefully no one but the most pretentious alt-porner would actually put mimes in an adult feature these days. So I still say that Green Door is a must see classic for an porn fan. It’s not as strokeable as your average Jules Jordan movie, but the DVD version is a nicely done piece of erotic history. I’ve been doing a lot of “classic” porn viewing thanks to a side project I’m working on and am really shocked by the way so many of them look like B-Movies through much of the non-sex action. This on features the opening diner scene that reminds me of an old horror flick. (For some reason the cook at the diner gives me a Two Thousand Maniacs vibe.) The dialog scenes that follow are inexplicable though. They make no sense and are only good because Marilyn is eating at table near the guys droning on. She really one of the most stunning women to ever star in adult films. I am impressed by the picture quality in these early scenes, but the pace of the movie is still pretty bad. Once Marilyn is abducted and we are introduced to the weird party atmosphere things get more interesting. You can really see where Kubrick was likely influenced by this movie (and vice versa) Marilyn is slowly prepped for her night of adventure in a way that is disturbing and visually beautiful at the same time. Too bad only the latter is true of the mime that serves as a warm up act. Before the sex starts we are assured that she will be unaware of what is going on tomorrow. Seems like an odd justification for rape as sport, but it is what it is. Marilyn is the center of attention sexually and she certainly doesn’t put up much of a fight. In looking back at my video review of this movie I noted serious issues with the picture and sound. These are cleared up for this DVD release. The picture is rather crisp and the sound has been greatly improved. With the girls party like the Red Sea, Johnny Keys strolls in and goes to town on Marilyn’s fuzzy muff. He slips his impressive tool into her and Marilyn takes it all. People have ripped me recently for not considering the sex in this movie to be great. Those people need to watch this scene shot for shot. The side of her face, her breast, his hip, his necklace, his face, her face, a random ring on someone’s finger, her ear, you get the picture. It’s super soft core and just doesn’t hold up to the best of what is shot today. The eye contact between performers is hot and Marilyn is beautiful, but even compared to the softest Vivid scene today, this movie looks like cable ready fodder. John leaves and the party goers watch as a giant swing descends from the ceiling. Marilyn is placed inside while some scary hippies surround her and get her ready for Johnny. The cut away shots to really ugly and fat people are kind of interesting. It somehow makes the whole thing seem a little more perverse. Marilyn is still the star of the show and compared to her, the best looking party goer is still pretty much chopped liver. For all the kink this may add, it definitely takes away from any eye candy we might get from the crowd shots. We come back to Marilyn for the big monster cumshot loop. It goes all psychedelic and really is as annoying as the final fifteen minutes of 2001. The final Marilyn blowjob long after the show is actually the best action this movie has to offer. We get a clear shot of her beautiful face as she sucks a hard dick until it is ready to explode. There hardcore shots of her fucking are not great by today’s standards, but certainly are a huge step up from what we have seen before. Review: Behind the Green Door is the great granddaddy of adult films. This film is the brain child of Jim and the late Artie Mitchell, producers of adult film loops, who decided to make the first feature length adult film. Behind the Green Door would also lead us into the Golden Age of adult entertainment. The film ended up being a huge theatrical success, partially due to the fact that Marilyn Chambers became the Ivory Snow girl just before the film's release. So how has this important piece of cinematic history held up over the years. Depending on your tastes, very well. If you are a lover of the classics, this film is sure to please. Despite the fact that Behind the Green Door was shot on a shoestring budget, the sets are very well done. They are much better than what you will find in the average adult film being produced today. Most of the film, I believe, was shot at the Mitchell Brothers owned O'Farrell Theatre. The cast is great too, with stage cast being very attractive, a rarity in the early seventies. Not all of the audience members are attractive though. For instance the corpulent woman in the audience is a major turn off, but casting like this makes the film seem more true to life that what you get today. The cast does a good acting job too, not that there is much for them to do. An interesting thing to note is the club's bouncer is played by Ben Davidson, an NFL player for the Oakland Raiders. The sex in the film is very tame, especially by the standards of today. However, this film shows very successfully that you can tame sex and still have a very erotic film. There is a massive amount of variety in the scenes throughout the film to keep the scenes from getting monotonous. As the sex is tame, this film is a prime candidate for couples. For its time, the sex here was considered hardcore and in some places even controversial. Its rather amazing to see how much society has changed in 30 years. For viewers who care, there are no condoms used in the film. The sexual themes present in the film are vaginal and oral sex with fingering, lesbian and orgies. This brings us toward the end of the film, which answers the age-old question of what a cum shot looks like in slow motion. What starts out as a well done very arty slow motion cum shot ends up becoming this hugely drawn out special effects laden scene. Instead of going on with the film after the cum shot is over, the cum shot ends up being shown over and over again repeatedly for several minutes with various types of visual special effects that I really could have done without. What may have been very impressive 30 years ago has turned into annoying today. The film is well written and as with many of the films produced during the golden age, the writing resembles a mainstream film more than the adult films of today do. Not all the scenes are written to include sex, some are just used to actually tell the story present in the film. The music used in the film is excellent as well. It is not your average 70s porno sounding music track and adds to the originality of the film. As with all films, not everything is perfect. The three biggest problems that plague the film are the earlier mentioned cumshot sequence. The earlier mentioned casting of the audience, where some of them are not very pleasing to the eye, detracting from the orgy scene. The final major problem lies in the editing of the film. It can be very choppy at times which becomes distracting. However, this film proves that with its shoestring budget that you don't need to use a lot of money to make a good porno. The Money Shot: Behind the Green Door is a must see for any aficionado of adult films and a must have for any serious collector of the classics. Viewers who like the classics, porn with a plot and couples should find this film very enjoyable. Viewers who require nasty sex or hate a plot to invade their porn will want to skip this title. Although this title tends to sell for a rather high price, if you are interested in it, it is definitely worth the cost.
